Set on a beautiful 1,300 acre country estate on the outskirts of Cavan Town, Farnham Estate is one of Ireland’s most popular Spa & Golf destinations with a superb reputation for being a genuine ‘retreat to nature’. This resort Hotel was opened in 2006 and boasts 158 bedrooms, a luxurious spa with outdoor infinity pool, forest walkways and an 18 hole golf course. Originally the home of Lord and Lady Farnham, the estate has a rich history in Cavan. The main house on Farnham Estate holds 8 bedrooms, all refurbished and restored to their former glory. The additions of a further 150 bedrooms came after the Estate was transformed into the resort it is today.
The team at Farnham Estate contacted MFM Joinery through another contractor on the Estate. They were looking for several projects to be completed. Restoration work as well as new installations. The Restoration work included Sash Windows in the old Farnham House. The new installations included joinery in the form of fire doors and sash windows for the new restaurant that was built in an old building on the estate and to provide joinery for the new Rotunda built outdoors on the estate lawn.
Refurbishment & Upgrade of Original Sash Windows to Farnham House.
Under direct instruction from Farnham Estate, MFM Joinery was awarded the contract to complete a full refurbishment and upgrade of all the original sash windows to the main house. When the hotel and spa was developed in the mid 2000’s, the main house took centre stage and every other aspect of the design was completed to ensure the original house remained the main focal point of the complex.
All works were completed in line with traditional methods of conservation, resulting in all the original single glazing being retained and only decayed timber sections being replaced with new “Accoya” timber section of matching profile.
However, the most challenging part of this project was the extremely tight programme. As the hotel remained live for the duration of the project, it was decided to complete the works in phases of approximately 2 bedrooms per phase.
Each phase was allocated as short duration as possible to complete the works, and with the hotel at full occupancy there was no room for overrun.
The entire project went exactly to plan with all phases completed as programmed.
The Cedar Restaurant
Under the Management of Adston Construction, MFM Joinery was awarded the main joinery packages which included new external sash windows and doors, external glazed fire screens, all internal doorsets and the supply of all timbers to the new feature staircase.
The Club House
Again under the management of local contractor, Adston Construction Ltd, MFM Joinery was awarded the contract to supply all internal doors sets, which included numerous fire doorsets and also a number sliding double doors.
Rotunda
MFM Joinery was approached by local contractor, Drumheckna Carpentry, to supply all the timber components to the new Rotunda, which is now the centre piece of the Front Lawn at Farnham Estate.
At initial contact, the overall size and layout had been agreed with the client, however the fine detail had yet to be decided. MFM Joinery provided ideas for numerous components including the fascia, soffit, cladding to columns, handrail and balustrade. Following discussions with Drumheckna Carpentry and Farnham Estate management, an agreement was reached on all the components after which MFM Joinery preceded to manufacture all. As can be seen from the attached picture, the finished product is a wonderful addition to the already beautiful gardens at Farnham Estate.
The Boat House
Again under the management of Drumheckna Carpentry, MFM Joinery was awarded the contract to supply all joinery to the new Boat House at Farnham Estate.
MFM Joinery again assisted in the design of all the joinery components required to make the boat house blend into its’ woodland setting.
Items supplied included sash windows, arched head t,g & v, sheeted doorset and the beautiful feature fasica to both the front and back of the building.
The team at MFM Joinery were delighted to accept the work on this historic building and in such a successful Hotel. The project was time bound but MFM Joinery love a challenge.
The management team in Farnham Estate were conscious that this was an especially important project for the site. Merging the old buildings to modern standards while still respecting their age and significance. The fact that MFM Joinery are members of the Georgian Society of Ireland, as well as their attention to detail and past testimonials, made their decision easy.
“We found Mark and all the team in MFM Joinery to be knowledgeable, solution driven and flexible to meeting the design teams’ vision. We were impressed that it is a family run business. A number of good contractors/surveyors would always recommend MFM Joinery which is a sign that they consistently do well for their clients.”
The knowledge and experience that MFM Joinery brought to this project was important for the owners. They were impressed by previous specialised joinery projects, especially the restoration of the sash windows. Because this was a busy hotel environment, Mark and his team were under a time target that had to be met. Even before the project was completed, MFM Joinery gave the management confidence that the sash window restoration would be completed in a timely manner, whilst enabling them to keep areas of the old house open for guests.
The management team at Farnham Estate are certain that they will be calling on the specialised services of MFM Joinery in the future. Another fruitful relationship for MFM Joinery in their home County of Cavan.
